A Lookout View: No on Measure M — we don’t want new barriers to much-needed housing

Measure M has clearly hit a nerve in our community and has become the most contentious initiative on the March 5 ballot. While we applaud efforts to bring more transparency to the often-confusing process of approving affordable units – and believe Santa Cruz owes its voters that – we believe M would likely just further slow the construction of badly needed housing in one of the least affordable markets in the country.

A Lookout View: Vote yes on Measures K and L

Lookout Endorsement: Our schools need our help. They need to fix roofs and heating, to modernize classrooms, update sports facilities and install better security systems. Santa Cruz County’s patchwork system of public education doesn’t allow the state of California to pay for these “extras.” That’s why we have to pass bonds to support our schools. Lookout endorses a yes vote on Measures K and L.

A Lookout View: Vote Shebreh Kalantari-Johnson for District 3 Santa Cruz County Supervisor

Lookout Endorsement: No matter who becomes the next District 3 supervisor, Santa Cruz County will benefit. The Lookout editorial board likes both candidates, but endorses Shebreh Kalantari-Johnson over Justing Cummings because we think she has the momentum the moment requires. We believe she will do the hard work and be the consensus-builder our community needs to address pressing issues of affordable housing, homelessness, mental health and climate change.
