Good morning! It’s Sept. 11 — here’s what’s going on in your community today…

Not as warm but pleasant in Aptos

Today will see areas of low clouds early; otherwise, mostly sunny and not as warm but pleasant. The high will be 75 with a low of 55. Wear your sunblock — the UV index is high (6/11). Allergy sufferers beware: There are high amounts of ragweed in the air.

Roadwork is affecting traffic in the region

  • Highway 1 near Mar Vista Drive in Aptos will be fully closed overnight Sept. 20 for construction of a pedestrian bridge. Southbound Highway 1 will be closed from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Drivers going south will need to detour at the Park Avenue off-ramp to Soquel Drive.

Property development

  • The Santa Cruz County Planning Department is currently accepting public comments on a zoning application to renew an existing permit for a two-bedroom, non-hosted short-term rental at 230 Rio Del Mar Blvd., Unit G, in the Aptos Planning Area. The proposed permit renewal would continue to allow overnight lodging for periods of up to 30 days at a time. Residents who wish to provide input on this application must submit their comments before the deadline of Sept. 15. (view application)

  • A permit application has been filed for a project at 342 Treasure Island Dr. in Aptos, proposing the removal of two existing 4-foot-tall wooden retaining walls and their replacement with two new 4-foot-tall concrete retaining walls in the same locations on the property. Because the site is located within the coastal zone, the work requires a Coastal Development Permit. (view details)
