Here they are, nine necessary know-abouts for the week ahead. It’s the summer-warmup B9:
- “Barbie”? On the beach? Under the Boardwalk? Can you possibly get any more plastic-fantastic-fabulous than that?
- The hardest-working entertainer in Santa Cruz? It just might be the talented Alex Lucero, who’s making a splash with a headlining Kuumbwa show Friday.
- The K-P Arena will be the spot to drink in (figuratively and literally) Santa Cruz’s culinary scene Saturday afternoon. It’s all there in the title of the event: “Forks, Corks & Kegs.”
- It’s too easy to assume that the age of the great sax players waned after Bird, Trane, Prez, Cannonball and Shorter. But Chris Potter is doing his generation proud.
- July 4, you probably have plans. But July 3? Come out to Abbott Square to participate in Lookout Trivia Night, with me!
- Local DJs pop up at Ocean View Park overlooking the San Lorenzo River in Santa Cruz to lead ecstatic dance sessions. All are welcome at Silent Disco in the Park.
- Sadly, Prince isn’t walking through the door. But that doesn’t mean we can’t all celebrate one of the greatest artists of his era. Meet The Purple Ones.
- Yes, it’s sold out. But if you’re holding a ticket, you’ll soon have a new respect for the ukulele after Jake Shimabukuro does his thing.
- Running in the Santa Cruz Firecracker is the best excuse — maybe the only excuse — to get up early on the Fourth of July. Or sleep in and just show up for the fun after the race is over.
