The lack of affordable housing is one of the most urgent challenges facing our community today. In Santa Cruz County, many families struggle just to rent a home, let alone dream of owning one. Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay takes a unique and transformative approach: we focus on affordable homeownership which empowers families, fostering strength, stability, and resilience. Habitat homeowners spend no more than 30% of their income on housing costs. With stable and affordable housing, families can invest in their futures—saving for retirement, funding their children’s education, building deep roots and becoming active, engaged members of the community. Our program builds homes, communities, and hope.

Gwen, a proud Habitat homeowner, captures the essence of this transformation: “The relief of knowing that nobody can come and say, ‘Oh, in 30 days you have to move out of your house or hey, next month your rent’s going up $400 a month.’ It allows you to make plans for your future. It allows for you to set aside money for other things instead of being in a place of uncertainty.”

Our program creates lasting impacts and builds a better future not only for the families we serve but also for the entire community. A recent study completed in partnership with UCSC’s Center for Economic Justice and Action highlighted the profound benefits of our work, showing improvements in economic stability, mental and physical well-being, family relationships, and community involvement. One parent shared, “Our kids are better off than we were. Because we have this stability, they could all go to college and now they’re all so smart. They’re going to do better than us and none of them are going to need help with housing.” Read the full report HERE

Our next project involves building thirteen homes in Watsonville for families earning 50-70% of the area median income—dedicated hard working individuals such as farmworkers, teachers, single parents, people who work in hospitality, government employees, small business owners and many more. We select homeowners based on greatest need, but they must also commit to putting in “sweat equity,” working 500 hours alongside volunteers and our professional construction crew to help build their own homes. They help physically build the foundation of a brighter future for their families.
