The City of Capitola will break ground Oct. 28 on Treasure Cove Playground in Jade Street Park, bringing an inclusive space for children of all ages and abilities to the Capitola community. Featuring a marine shoreline theme, the playground will incorporate specialized, wheelchair-accessible equipment with sensory play structures and climbing zones.
This project is a partnership between the City of Capitola and County Park Friends, which led a capital campaign that raised more than $1 million in private donations from over 1,500 donors.
The City of Capitola contributed $475,000 in initial funding, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded a $3.2 million grant to develop the playground. Some of this funding was invested in improvements at Jade Street Park, including new restrooms and improved pedestrian access.
“Treasure Cove represents the very best of Capitola, a community that came together to dream big and make it happen. We are deeply grateful to County Park Friends, our donors and the countless volunteers who made this playground possible,” Capitola Mayor Joe Clarke said in a media release.
Verde Design laid out the design for the playground, which features a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round, cozy domes and play structures. The new playground will be located at Jade Street Park at 4400 Jade St. in Capitola’s Jewel Box neighborhood.
The city is hosting a community event at Jade Street Park on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 10 a.m. to honor project supporters and donors. The city aims to open Treasure Cove Playground and complete the Jade Street Park upgrades in 2026.
