On Wednesday afternoon, police responded to reports of an erratic man threatening passersby in Capitola Village with a large hammer. Caller descriptions enabled the police to quickly locate the man on the Stockton Avenue Bridge, brandishing a large piece of driftwood.

Officers found that the man had tried to physically steal a dog from a family on vacation near the beach. He then threatened members of the family, including multiple young children, by yelling and aggressively wielding a large framing hammer. He was intoxicated and uncooperative, the Capitola Police Department said in a social media post, damaging a patrol car before police were able to detain him.

The man was arrested and booked for attempted robbery, four counts of brandishing a deadly weapon, animal abuse, child endangerment, a probation violation and vandalism. His identity has not yet been made public.
