The City of Santa Cruz will finally reopen the block of West Cliff Drive between Columbia Street and Woodrow Avenue to two-way traffic on Friday, nearly two years after it was severely damaged due to the deluge of atmospheric rivers in January 2023.
While one stretch of West Cliff will now be open, several others remain under construction. The scenic coastal road will remain entirely closed to vehicle traffic between Woodrow Avenue and Almar Avenue, where crews are still working to fill and stabilize a sea cave running under the road.

Miguel Lizarraga, an associate professional engineer with the city’s public works department, told Lookout earlier this month that if the rest of the work goes smoothly, and weather permits, two-way traffic could be restored to the entirety of West Cliff Drive by the spring.
