An approximately 26-acre controlled burn will take place on private land near the intersection of Jamison Creek Road and Empire Grade on Tuesday, Oct. 15, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire)’s San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit will carry out the burn, weather permitting, and said in a release that smoke could be noticed in the area one to two days following it.
“This burn is being conducted as part of Cal Fire’s Vegetation Management Program and aims to benefit the local grassland ecosystem by reducing hazardous fuel loads, preventing the encroachment of non-native plant species and promoting the regeneration of native species,” the agency said in a release. “Additionally, this project will enhance wildlife habitat [and] improve public safety by lowering wildfire risk. … When optimal conditions are met, trained wildland firefighters manage the burn while monitoring the weather, smoke dispersal and fire behavior.”
