The Starbucks on Mount Hermon Road near Skypark in Scotts Valley has voted 15-3 to join Starbucks Workers United, the union representing Starbucks employees across the country.

“Winning our election 15 to 3 is a huge victory for all of us who believe in a fair and equitable workplace. Despite facing union busting, chronic understaffing, and unfair treatment, we stood together and made our voices heard,” said barista Serrana Cypret in a news release. “This win proves the power of solidarity, and we’re ready to fight for the respect, support, and working conditions we deserve.”

The Scotts Valley location is the fifth Santa Cruz County store to vote to join the union. The locations on Ocean Street and Mission Street became the first to vote in favor of unionization in California in 2022, while a third followed suit later that year. A newer location, on Soquel Avenue near Dominican Hospital, is a part of the union as well.

The unionization movement started in Buffalo, New York, in 2021, when a store in the city became the first Starbucks location in the United States to unionize.
