Monterey County officials have issued a shelter in place for residents near the Moss Landing battery plant after a fire broke out at the facility early Friday morning.
Crews from the North County Fire Protection District of Monterey County responded to the fire shortly after 6:15 a.m., finding smoke coming from the north side of the facility. Firefighters are evacuating the plant and “accounting for personnel while working to stabilize the incident,” according to a Facebook post by Cal Fire.
The California Highway Patrol has closed a portion of Highway 1 between Dolan Road and Via Tanques Road.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office issued a shelter-in-place order in the surrounding areas, and recommends that residents close all windows and doors, turn off heating, air conditioning and other systems that bring outside air indoors and to not go outside.
The 300-megawatt facility caught fire on Jan. 16, 2025. The facility contained 100,000 lithium-ion batteries, and nearly 55% of the batteries were damaged after the incident. Cleanup efforts at the facility were underway, led by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
