A basketball player who once played for the Santa Cruz Warriors was arrested for allegedly attempting to bring illegal drugs into Indonesia, where he currently plays professional basketball. He could face life in prison or the death penalty if found guilty.
Jarred Dwayne Shaw, 34, of Dallas, Texas was arrested in early May following a police raid of his apartment just outside of Jakarta, where officers seized 132 pieces of cannabis candies, the Associated Press reported. Indonesia’s drug laws are very strict, and those convicted of smuggling may be sentenced to death via firing squad.
Shaw has played for several teams in the Indonesian Basketball League since 2022, but had a brief stint with the Santa Cruz Warriors during the 2015-2016 season.
According to the Soekarno-Hatta Airport’s police chief, Ronald Sipayung, Shaw’s arrest followed a tip from the airport’s customs that reported the basketball player had received a suspicious package from Thailand, where cannabis was recently decriminalized in November 2024.
Shaw was currently playing for the Tangerang Hawks, who immediately fired him. The Indonesian Basketball League banned him from playing for life.
