Cal Fire crews stopped forward progress on a fire east of The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park and the Soquel Demonstration State Forest that broke out earlier Monday morning.

Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz unit spokesperson Cecile Juliette told Lookout that the fire was first reported shortly after 7 a.m., and eventually prompted a response from both Cal Fire’s San Mateo-Santa Cruz unit and the Santa Clara unit.

The agencies requested helicopter support, as the fire was located well into the wilderness with few to no access roads in the vicinity, making it difficult for ground crews to reach the site of the fire. A Cal Fire Santa Clara unit helitack crew was dropping water onto the site as ground crews worked to gain access.

As of 11 a.m., fire crews were making good progress on containing the blaze, and had halted the fire’s spread. Early estimates say that the fire reached about 2 acres in size.

The cause of the fire had not yet been determined as of publication time.
