Larger-than-normal rip currents and shore breaks – waves that peak and crash directly onto the steep shoreline – might splash on your beach plans between now and Sunday night.

The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazards statement for Santa Cruz County for the three days, warning of waves reaching 12 to 16 feet along beaches facing northwest and west.

The agency also warned of sneaker waves, which can run farther up than normal on beaches, rock and jetties and catch beachgoers off guard. Rip currents can be stronger in around piers, jetties and inlets.

“Stay off the rocks,” the agency wrote in its statement, “and NEVER turn your back on the ocean!”
