This week in history

Watsonville had professional baseball 125 years ago in 1899, playing home games at Porter’s Park. Known by the Hayseeds and the Gardiners, the minor league team went 25-24 in the California League. Several players from the squad went on to play in the major leagues, including Ernie Courtney, Ira Davis, George Harper and Ed Pabst

When the team from San Jose folded that August, Watsonville was dropped as well so that the league would have an even number of teams.
