Accomplished actor and drama teacher Robert Bailey is on his way to Santa Cruz to stage a one-person original play called “In Some Dark Valley: The Testimony of Reverend Brand” at downtown’s Actors’ Theatre.

The play is set to run for three performances, this Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Saturday night’s performance is a benefit for victims of Hurricane Helene in Appalachia.

The play, written and performed by Bailey, takes on the point of view of a post-Civil War 19th-century preacher who uses stories and songs to express his religious passions against a landscape scarred by war and poverty. Bailey, who inhabits several characters over the course of the 65-minute play, most recently performed the piece at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in June, where it won the “Best of Fringe” award. He is a faculty member of the University of Southern California School of Dramatic Arts. Bailey once directed plays in Santa Cruz as part of Netless Theatre. This is his first foray into local theater in more than 30 years.

Sunday’s matinee performance will include a talk-back session with Bailey after the performance. Tickets are now on sale.
