Having bought our Santa Cruz home in 1998, we are now millionaires through no effort on our part.

We can easily afford to chip in $96 per year for the common good. I donate that much and more to housing nonprofits, but here my parcel tax charge will leverage millions in collective revenues to make a bigger systematic impact to prevent homelessness.

As a Catholic and Holy Cross parishioner, I am committed to following the second-greatest commandment, to love my neighbor as myself. As a homeowner, I want my neighbors to have housing that they can afford.

And who are my neighbors? Teachers, hotel workers, nurses, restaurant cooks and waiters, nursing home and in-home health care staff, students, city employees, police officers, firefighters – everyone who contributes to our economy, educates and cares for our children and elderly and provides public services we all use.
