The War Powers Resolution, passed by Congress in 1973, stipulates that if a president orders military acts against a foreign nation without the consent of Congress, those military acts must stop after 60 days unless Congress gives its consent.

On Feb. 28, President Donald Trump ordered multiple military assaults on Iran without the consent of Congress. He has continued those assaults without seeking congressional authorization. On April 28, Trump’s war will reach the 60-day limit. The War Powers Resolution specifies that if the president has not obtained congressional approval by that date, he must stop the war.

In addition to failing to seek congressional approval for his unauthorized war, Trump is now reported to be seeking a supplementary funding bill of more than $200 billion to pay for continuing that war. If Congress passes this supplementary funding, Trump will undoubtedly present that as approval for the war.

Please contact Rep. Jimmy Panetta and Sen. Adam Schiff and Sen. Alex Padilla and express strong support for them to insist that the war against Iran must obtain congressional consent in order to continue and that no supplemental appropriation will be approved in the absence of congressional authorization for the war.

Please also express strong support for impeaching and convicting Trump if he continues the war without congressional authorization.
