Vice Mayor Shebreh Kalantari-Johnson’s opinion piece makes it clear she is not listening to opposing viewpoints regarding development in Santa Cruz. She dismisses these viewpoints as “chatter,” rather than informed opinions from residents who are clearly invested in the future of our community.
She and other city councilmembers are irresponsibly transforming the character of our special town into an extension of the urban sprawl of the Bay Area, all under the false guise of inclusivity and sustainability. I don’t buy it. If the council is successful in bulldozing the unique character of Santa Cruz, members will be in the unenviable company of civic leaders who leveled community after community all in the name of “urban renewal” in decades past.
Once these communities are gone, they are gone forever. Shame on our council for encouraging and irresponsibly approving many new developments that I believe will change our town for the worse, forever.
