Roadwork is affecting traffic in the region

  • A traffic hazard was reported at San Andreas Road and Camino Al Barranco at 4:51 a.m. today. Authorities closed the road at San Andreas and Seascape Boulevard, and multiple crews, including Pacific Gas & Electric and county roads, responded. The road remained closed with crews working in the area, and there was no estimated time for reopening.

Property development

  • The Santa Cruz County Planning Department has received a zoning application for a proposed project at 499 Hames Rd. in Watsonville. The application details plans to construct a new in-ground swimming pool measuring 12 by 32 feet, with a depth of 4 to 7 feet and a total water volume of approximately 20,944 gallons, as well as an attached spa measuring 7 by 12 feet, adjacent to the existing single-family home. The project also includes a 4-foot high retaining wall, a pool equipment pad, and new pool decking (to be installed by others). Safety features will include an automatic pool cover, required safety alarms, and a 5-foot high non-climb deer fence with self-closing, self-latching gates surrounding the pool area. The applicant is requesting a reduction of the standard 200-foot agricultural buffer setback from the adjacent CA-zoned property to about 148 feet at the south property line and 120 feet at the west property line. Site work will involve removing and replacing up to 6 feet of clay soil beneath the pool with engineered fill, as well as grading, drainage improvements, and erosion control measures. The pool will be constructed using gunite (shotcrete), and all work will comply with California Building Code, Health and Safety Code, and Santa Cruz County requirements for pool safety, energy efficiency, and stormwater management. No landscaping is included in the scope of this permit. (view application)
