Weekender: Launching into spring, Drain’s fundraising T-shirt and busy local theater scene

SPRING WHO?

The first official day of spring is Friday – a shocking fact considering it felt as though summer thoroughly creamed that mild season in an arm wrestling contest this week. The record-shattering heat wave has left me equally grateful for the air conditioning at Lookout’s downtown office and quick post-work evening ocean dips at my local beach. 

My mental switch for summer activities also flipped as I bought yet another fresh tube of sunscreen, and thankfully, it’s a great weekend to get out in the community and gather for films, markets, music and festivals.

The Top Dog Film Festival at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz this Saturday celebrates four-legged friends while fundraising for the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. During the day on the Westside, Humble Sea Brewing Co. is celebrating its ninth anniversary with special beers, food trucks, live DJs and artists. That evening in Felton, chefs Jessica Yarr and Diego Felix are teaming up for a Spring Dinner Collaboration at The Grove Cafe. This weekend, Santa Cruz Mountains-born band The Coffis Brothers will be at Moe’s Alley for Coffis Space 4, a two-day festival with multiple artists. – Lily Belli
