This Saturday, for the third time since President Donald Trump took office last year, “No Kings” protests will be held in Santa Cruz and Watsonville. Judging by the state of – well, just about everything – participation will likely be high. In October, an estimated 15,000 people participated in the “No Kings” Santa Cruz rally, and more than 3,000 in Watsonville. Even if you don’t plan on attending, expect large crowds in these areas throughout the day as you move about your weekend.

The protest starts in Santa Cruz at San Lorenzo Park at 10 a.m. before marching along Pacific Avenue. In Watsonville, speakers and performances begin at noon at the downtown plaza.

“Given the status of world events and our national events here in the U.S., people still have reason to be mad and angry, and show up to this,” Amanda Harris Altice, one of the organizers of Indivisible Santa Cruz County, told Tania Ortiz, Lookout’s South County correspondent. “So, I’m hoping that we have a larger turnout.” Read Tania’s story on the protests here. – Lily Belli

FAVORITE MUSIC FESTIVAL

CABRILLO FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC

“This is a real world-class event – a lot of now-famous composers got their start at it. Beautiful, unusual music, extremely talented performers from all over the world. Open rehearsals are great. Santa Cruz should be extra proud of this.”

A Santa Cruz chef and commercial kitchen owner plans to transform the former Burger. and D20 Pizza restaurant space on Mission Street into the Cruz Room, a collaborative hub for food, music and art with multiple businesses under one roof. Established pizza pop-up Sleight Of Hand has already signed on, and owner Matisse Selman is seeking additional partners to bring the community-focused concept to life. Read the story here.
