Memorial Day opens the gates to the summer season. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and concessionaires open full-time, the school year ends, and tourists flood back to the area.

On Saturday, Felton hosts its annual โ€œFelton Remembersโ€ parade and festival to honor those who served in the U.S. military. The parade starts at 11 a.m. in downtown Felton, followed by the Covered Bridge Festival at nearby Covered Bridge Park, with live music, kids activities, artists and food and beverage vendors. Both events are free.ย

Also in Felton, Roaring Camp Railroads is hosting the first annual Lumberjack Days, celebrating the areaโ€™s West Coast logging heritage. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, competitors will face off in lumberjack events to earn the title of Bull of the Woods. There will also be live music, all-ages activities, barbecue for purchase and crafts. The festival is free, although parking is $10 per car.ย ย

In Santa Cruz, the Santa Cruz Longboard Union Club Invitational โ€“ the longest-running longboard surf contest, it claims โ€“ will be held at Steamer Lane. Organizers also invited market vendors selling clothing, jewelry, wetsuits and more. Watching from West Cliff Drive is free. โ€“ Lily Belli
