On June 7, the Santa Cruz SPCA and Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter will again join dozens of shelters across the nation for the annual Adopt-A-Pet Day.

As California shelters struggle with an overcrowding crisis, the event aims to find homes for at least 5,000 animals in a single day.

As an incentive, both local shelters will offer fee-waived adoptions that day for animals that are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will cover adoption fees.

“The Santa Cruz SPCA and county shelter play essential roles in addressing this crisis,” said Mandi Hart, shelter manager at the Santa Cruz SPCA. “We’re thrilled to take part again this year and hope our community will help us match — or beat — last year’s numbers by adopting, sharing and spreading the word.”

The SPCA is located at 2601 Chanticleer Ave. in Live Oak; the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is located at 1001 Rodriguez St., also in Live Oak. Both will follow their typical hours of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Adopters must be over 21 and complete an application.
