A dog from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office’s K9 unit was recently rewarded for putting her training into good use.

After detecting narcotics during a traffic stop, K9 Hazel alerted officers to several ounces of methamphetamine, heroin and evidence of drug sales.

Officers quickly arrested the driver for narcotics-related charges and child endangerment, since a young child was also in the car.

Hazel received extra treats for the discovery, which the sheriff’s office shared online in response to community praise for the dog.

At the same time, the Santa Cruz Police Department is seeking further community support for its K9 unit as it revamps its training schedule.

The police department is looking for businesses willing to offer their buildings, facilities or yards for SCPD’s K9 training sessions. Training locations change weekly to ensure police dogs are challenged, engaged, and ready for any environment.

Anyone willing to donate space to this cause can contact Officer Brian George at bgeorge@santacruzca.gov.
