The City of Santa Cruz Water Department is warning customers against scammers who are going door to door claiming dangerous bacteria and contaminants are in local drinking water. According to multiple reports, these individuals, who are not affiliated with the water department, are requesting entry into homes to test water.

The department said the city’s drinking water is safe and meets both state and federal standards. The department does not conduct unscheduled door-to-door water testing or make home visits unannounced. Any water quality sampling that requires a visit is arranged in advance, and staff arrive in a marked city vehicle with proper city identification.

Thousands of water department laboratory tests are performed by lab analysts throughout the year to ensure the water supply meets monitoring requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California State Water Resources Control Board Division of Drinking Water.
