Quick Take

Debris from last Monday’s big swell has forced State Parks officials to extend the closure of Twin Lakes and Seabright beaches until Saturday.

The mass of debris caused by last Monday’s big swell and the partial collapse of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf have forced state officials to extend the closure of Twin Lakes and Seabright state beaches until Saturday.

Despite cleanup efforts that have been going on since last week, the closures have now been extended twice.

Originally the closures, which included Seacliff State Beach and Rio Del Mar State Beach, were set to end last Tuesday. But after damage assessments, State Parks extended the closures until Christmas Day for Seacliff State Beach and Rio Del Mar State Beach, and until Monday morning for Twin Lakes State Beach and Seabright State Beach.

California State Parks officials assessed the conditions at Twin Lakes and Seabright beaches and determined that there was enough debris to force them to keep the beaches closed until 6 a.m. on Saturday. Both Twin Lakes and Seabright beaches will be closed for public use, entry, recreation and occupancy.

Cleanups will continue to ensure public safety after the extreme weather conditions caused infrastructure damage and unsafe beach conditions.
