In a letter to the editor, a Westside Santa Cruz resident takes issue with a recent op-ed contending that West Cliff Drive should remain a two-way street.
West Cliff Drive’s future
Letter to the editor: Hooray for two-way road on West Cliff
Have something to say? Lookout welcomes letters to the editor, within our policies, from readers. Guidelines here. Finally! Common sense enters the discussion about what to do over West Cliff Drive and shoreline erosion. I am referring to Glenn Seiler’s op-ed about keeping the street for two-way traffic and natural feature restoration. Hooray! I am one […]
One-way traffic on West Cliff won’t help anything
Changing the traffic pattern on West Cliff Drive doesn’t make sense, writes Glenn Seiler, who is a member of a newly formed coalition determined to preserve the iconic, scenic Santa Cruz road as a two-way street. He insists there are better options than managed retreat.
Carmageddon: As Bethany Curve repairs begin, West Cliff draws closer to reopening
The City of Santa Cruz is aiming for one-way traffic to return to the section of West Cliff Drive between Columbia Street and Woodrow Avenue by midsummer, as longer-term repairs finally get underway. Additionally, the city has begun exploring the idea of managed retreat with another section of the coastal road.
Letter to the editor: One-way makes sense on West Cliff
In a letter to the editor, a pair of Santa Cruz residents agree with a previous resident’s Lookout opinion piece about making West Cliff Drive one-way.
The ocean is coming for West Cliff Drive – we have to make it one-way, even if we don’t trust the city
Brooke Secor lives close to West Cliff Drive and will likely see traffic increase on her block where her kids play if the City of Santa Cruz chooses to make the iconic street a one-way road. But, after attending community meetings and reviewing the city’s vision plan, she is convinced a one-way is the best alternative. To get others to agree, she says, the city will have to work to regain the community trust it lost in 2023, when it made poor diversion choices after the storms washed away part of the road.
West Cliff Drive: The city council approved the vision, but we still have far to go to achieve real safety for pedestrians and cyclists
Stephen Svete and Amelia Conlen, board members of Bike Santa Cruz County, support making West Cliff Drive a one-way roadway while expanding right-of-way infrastructure for pedestrians and bikers. They were disappointed on April 9 when the Santa Cruz City Council did not move forward with city staff’s two-year pilot grant application recommendation, but are heartened that the overall vision was approved. Their nonprofit organization will continue to advocate for less vehicle traffic along the iconic coastal corridor.
Carmageddon: West Cliff Drive could be open to traffic by year’s end
After nearly a year and a half, the Bethany Curve culvert repairs are finally getting underway Monday in Santa Cruz. The damaged section of West Cliff Drive between Columbia Street and Woodrow Avenue could reopen to one-way traffic within 10 weeks, opening the door for a fully drivable road for the first time in almost two years.
Carmageddon: One-way West Cliff pilot funding not available for two more years; public works focusing on other repairs
The missed funding opportunity for a pilot project to make Santa Cruz’s West Cliff Drive one-way will likely push any prospective approval and implementation years into the future, but new committees to guide the future of West Cliff projects will begin working on priorities soon.
Santa Cruz City Council shelves one-way West Cliff project
The Santa Cruz City Council voted against a one-way West Cliff Drive pilot project Tuesday, saying that the community and the council need more time before making a major decision on the matter. Councilmember Shebreh Kalantari-Johnson introduced a motion with alternative next steps, which passed unanimously.
