Three local students headed to university will do so with the help of scholarships from Bay Federal Credit Union.
James Parker is a sociology major at Cabrillo College. He’s planning to transfer to a four-year institution next year. Laura Hodges is entering a bachelor’s-to-doctorate program in occupational science at the University of Southern California. Spike Sorensen will pursue his bachelor’s degree in computer science at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, this fall.
Each recipient received $1,500, an award for essays on technology’s impact on their generation’s financial literacy and money management. Each student also recommended improvements to financial literacy education.
“Every year, our scholarship recipients inspire us with their drive and commitment to building a brighter future,” said Carrie Birkhofer, Bay Federal’s president and CEO. “We’re honored to support these incredible individuals as they take the next step in their academic and professional goals.”
Bay Federal Credit Union, a not-for-profit financial institution, has awarded more $94,000 in scholarships to higher education students.
