The state of California will pay for nearly $1 million worth of work in Santa Cruz County aimed at wildfire prevention and harm reduction. It’s one of 94 wildfire mitigation projects Cal Fire is funding across the state, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office announced on Tuesday.

Soquel San Jose Road, which runs south to north between Paper Mill Road in Soquel and Summit Road along the Santa Clara County line and is described as a “critical evacuation route,” will receive 5.2 miles of “hazardous fuel reduction treatment in and adjacent to the road right-of-way.”

The work will be done in partnership with the Fire Safe County Roads program of the Santa Cruz Mountains Alliance and Santa Cruz County Roads Maintenance Division.

The grant will also provide continued funding for a countywide wood-chipping program that offers on-site chipping services for homeowners to reduce their wildfire risk.
