A 4.0-magnitude earthquake centered just east of Gilroy was felt throughout the area at 6:16 a.m. on Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was followed by two smaller aftershocks, each a couple minutes later: a 2.7 quake and then a 3.6 quake.

Residents felt the seismic activity. Within a short time, a dozen people had reported feeling them to the USGS tracking site.
