Watsonville’s creativity takes center stage on April 18 with Ripple Watsonville: The Cultural District Unfolds—a day-long celebration of art, music, film, and community.
Part of the Ripple Effect Arts Festival, this event is one of several taking place across Santa Cruz County during California’s Arts, Culture, and Creativity Month. Together, these gatherings recognize and invest in the region’s creative communities at a time when arts and culture play an essential role in connection, identity, and local economies.

In Watsonville, this moment also reflects the growing momentum of its Cultural District—highlighting the artists, organizations, and community spaces shaping the city’s cultural future.
Throughout the day, visitors are invited to explore downtown through exhibitions, mural tours, film screenings, workshops, food, and music—experiencing the creativity and community that define Watsonville today.
From vibrant murals and documentary screenings to hands-on workshops, lowrider showcases, and a rooftop dance party, downtown Watsonville will transform into a walkable cultural experience highlighting the artists, organizations, and traditions that make the city unique. The event invites residents and visitors alike to explore the City of Watsonville’s growing cultural district and experience the creativity that has long been rooted in the community.
At the Watsonville Center for the Arts, an initiative of Arts Council Santa Cruz County, visitors can explore a variety of exhibits. Many Truths, One World, a social and environmental art exhibition created by high school student teachers from the Arts Council’s Mariposa Arts program. The showcase highlights artwork developed by young teaching artists who work directly with local youth in classrooms across the community. Additional artwork throughout the center will feature pieces by Claraty Arts, expanding the exhibition experience into multiple creative spaces within the building. The center will also host a makers market organized by Arte del Corazón, creating a space for local artists and artisans to connect with the community and share and sell their work.
Pajaro Valley Arts will feature its Hot Off the Walls: Art to Go exhibition. Visitors can enjoy local food trucks, music by Phillip Retamoza, and explore a lowrider car showcase featuring vehicles from Family First and Classic Memories. Additional cars from Watsonville Riders and Watsonville Impalas will be on display on the Civic Plaza rooftop and along Main Street between PV Arts and Watsonville Center for the Arts, bringing an iconic element of local culture into the heart of the celebration.

Visitors interested in Watsonville’s public art can also join walking tours led by Watsonville Brillante, which will guide participants through the murals surrounding the Civic Plaza Parking Garage. Many of the murals were created by Watsonville artist Juan R. Fuentes, whose work has become an important visual part of the city’s cultural identity.
Inside the Civic Plaza Community Room, the Watsonville Film Festival will host documentary screenings throughout the day. The program includes Strawberry Picker, a short documentary about Fuentes produced by Inspira Studios, as well as Orozco: Man of Fire, a film exploring the life and work of renowned Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco.
Community members can also participate in a hands-on mosaic-making workshop led by the Community Arts & Empowerment program. Participants will learn how to cut tile and contribute pieces to a mosaic mural that will become the stage skirt for the new stage at the Watsonville Plaza.

The rooftop of the Civic Plaza Parking Garage will serve as the event’s central gathering space, featuring an information booth, local food vendors and more.
The celebration will conclude there with a dance party from 4 to 6 p.m. featuring local DJ XXIIIHRS.
“This event is a celebration of Watsonville,” says Mayra Ruiz Valtierra, a local Watsonville artist and Arts Council staff membe.. “It’s about showcasing our artists, our students, our community, and our city. We want people to come experience the creativity and culture that make Watsonville so special.”
This event celebrates Watsonville’s vibrant culture and creativity, from its murals and arts organizations to the artists and community who call it home.
Free and family-friendly, the day includes art, workshops, films, food, and music—an invitation to experience the creativity and community at the heart of Watsonville.
