I loved Daniel DeLong’s July 19 Community Voices opinion piece, “I’d make a really good billionaire and think I should be given the opportunity to prove it.” It was fair and funny! And he is so self-sacrificing (not)!
I had forgotten it was the love of money, not money itself, that the Bible says is the root of all (or just the vast preponderance of) evil. I’m waiting for a golden calf to be commissioned for the entrance hall of the White House, or maybe for the White House executive residence bathroom for a more private worshipping experience. Hey! If the calves could be mass-produced and sold to fellow, seeming heathens, Number One’s No. 1 project could be further advanced.
It did occur to me that when DeLong generously credits billionaires with working hard, he doesn’t note that a lot of people are working really hard, sometimes also building on the hard work of others, sometimes not, and we hardly pay people according to how hard they work. If we did, imagine how incomes would change.
I’ll be on the lookout for other Lookout Community Voices pieces as good as this one.
