The National Weather Service is forecasting three separate weather systems — weak storms — to hit Santa Cruz County this week.

Light rain is expected to begin on Tuesday and should continue through early Wednesday, with the arrival of the first weather system.

The NWS forecasts a brief dry stretch Wednesday afternoon through Thursday, before the second system arrives on Friday and Saturday. Residents can expect a quarter of an inch up to half an inch of rain in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Forecasters said Monday it was still too early to give specific details about the third system, which is slated to arrive late Saturday and last into next week.

“We don’t really have any flooding concerns given that we just had three weeks of dry weather, so our soils are fairly dry right now and can absorb more water,” said Rachel Kennedy, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Monterey office.

Though the forecast doesn’t call for wind, Kennedy recommends securing any outdoor objects and driving cautiously as the roads become more slippery.

“This weather is fairly typical” for the winter season, Kennedy said.
