Cabrillo College is set to host its first-ever Mariachi Festival, inviting the community to immerse themselves in the vibrant sounds and colorful traditions of Mexico. Scheduled for June 9th at 2:00 PM in the picturesque Samper Recital Hall, this eagerly anticipated event promises an unforgettable celebration of mariachi music and culture.
This year’s lineup includes:
- Mariachi Osos de Pájaro Valley High School: Known for their impeccable musicianship, this group from Freedom and Watsonville delivers authentic renditions of traditional mariachi classics.
- Mariachi Ilusión: This group of talented young musicians is dedicated to preserving the art of mariachi for future generations.
- Cabrillo Mariachi Ensemble: Showcasing traditional Mexican popular music in an ensemble setting.
- Mariachi Eterno de UCSC: A local favorite, featuring passionate young adult musicians from Santa Cruz and surrounding areas.
- Mariachi Libertad: This newly created ensemble breaks barriers and challenges stereotypes with their fresh perspective on mariachi tradition.
- Mariachi Santa Cruz: A popular professional group with a long history of performances in the county.
“We are thrilled to welcome these exceptional mariachi bands to Cabrillo College for what promises to be an unforgettable afternoon of music and culture,” said John Graulty, Ed.D., Dean of Visual, Applied, & Performing Arts (VAPA) at Cabrillo College. “The Mariachi Festival is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the beauty and diversity of Mexican music.”
Rodolfo Vega, Professor of Mariachi Ensemble Performance, will serve as the master of ceremonies for the festival.
Tickets for the Mariachi Festival are available for purchase online at Cabrillo College Events or in-person at the Cabrillo College Box Office outside Crocker Theater, Thursday through Saturday from 12:00 to 6:00 PM, and one hour before the performance or at the door on the day of the event.
