Cabrillo College welcomes Dr. Carlin Truong as its newly appointed director of choral and vocal studies. In a role that feels tailor-made for his inclusive, imaginative sensibility, Truong brings a global background and a passion for programming both the classical canon and unexpected repertoire.

Truong is best known for cultivating concerts that put students at the center. He invites them to stretch not only their voices, but their worldviews. He has led ensembles across the country and abroad, from middle and high schools to universities – even leading choirs in Ghana – and has served in major roles with institutions like the Houston Symphony Chorus.

His debut with Cabrillo comes just in time for the holidays. On December 5, 6 and 7, the Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus and the Cabrillo Youth Chorus will present their 42nd Annual Music for the Feast of Christmas at Holy Cross Church in Santa Cruz.

Then, on December 12 and 13, his chamber choir, Cantiamo! Cabrillo, will perform Concert for a Winter’s Eve – in Carmel Mission Basilica and then back at Holy Cross Church.

He describes the season’s programming as celebratory and global: “These concerts will feature engaging, holiday-themed works from around the globe,” he said, highlighting his commitment to diversity in repertoire.

The decision to name Truong to the post comes as part of a broader effort by Cabrillo’s Visual, Applied & Performing Arts division to deepen its community roots and provide young singers with performance opportunities. Under Truong’s direction, the Cabrillo Youth Chorus continues its longtime mission of welcoming singers ages 8–18 into a program that emphasizes musical literacy, rehearsal discipline and ensemble spirit.

His arrival has already drawn warm praise from campus leadership. “The energy and passion he brings to every rehearsal connects the singers to the music and to each other,” said John Graulty, dean of the VAPA division, noting how Truong’s arrival underscores Cabrillo’s commitment to choral excellence.

For local residents and holiday music lovers, it’s a gift: two weeks of seasonally resonant choral offerings, culminating in what promises to be a memorable introduction for Cabrillo’s newest choral leader. Tickets are available through Cabrillo’s VAPA ticket office online or by calling the box office.
