The Capitola Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying a burglary suspect who evaded officers and led to a shelter-in-place order earlier this week.

On Monday, police responded to a report of a residential burglary in the 800 block of Riverview Drive, near Soquel Creek between Capitola Village and Highway 1.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers located a possible suspect in the brush area near the property. However, when they tried to make contact, the suspect, a man, fled into the Soquel Creek area, moving toward the Stockton Avenue Bridge.

With the help of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, the California Highway Patrol and a K-9 team from the Watsonville Police Department, police established a perimeter and deployed a drone to help with the search. Despite all these efforts, the officers were unable to locate the suspect because of the challenging terrain.

As a precaution, a shelter-in-place order was issued for the surrounding neighborhood. The order has since been lifted, and police say there’s no threat to public safety.

The suspect is described as a man about 30 to 40 years old, about 6 feet tall, with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, a black hooded sweatshirt with a light-colored logo on the back, dark pants and dark shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Capitola Police Department Investigations Unit at 831-475-4242.
