From the second story above the Esplanade in Capitola Village, Pete’s Fish House, which opened in August in the former Capitola Bar & Grill space, offers sweeping views of Monterey Bay, Capitola Beach and the row of historic beach bungalows. Its seafood-focused menu, created by chefs Anthony Kresge and Desmond Schneider, is both approachable and surprisingly elegant, with composed appetizers like scallop verde mingling with comfort dishes such as rich, creamy pasta and clams.

Full overnight closure of Highway 1 south starts Sunday, Sept. 22

Full overnight closures of southbound Highway 1 in Santa Cruz between Capitola and Aptos will take place on four nights Sunday through Thursday, Sept. 22-26, to accommodate work on north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements. Motorists will be detoured off Highway 1 southbound between Park Avenue and State Park Drive and should expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

As Theo Lengyel murder trial enters third week, witnesses recall an explosive personality who refused help

In the first two weeks of the murder trial in the death of Capitola’s Alice “Alix” Herrmann, prosecutors have called a parade of character witnesses who have described defendant Theo Lengyel as a combative person prone to alcohol-fueled rages. Lanes will close Sunday-Thursday for Highway 1 work between Capitola and Santa Cruz

For five consecutive nights beginning Sunday, Sept. 15, the left lane in both the north and southbound directions of Highway 1 between 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive in Santa Cruz will be closed. Northbound overnight lane closures will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with southbound closures in effect 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. According to the California Department of Transportation, motorists should expect delays of up to 10 minutes.
