Full overnight closures of southbound Highway 1 in Santa Cruz between Capitola and Aptos will take place on four nights Sunday through Thursday, Sept. 22-26, to accommodate work on north and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements. Motorists will be detoured off Highway 1 southbound between Park Avenue and State Park Drive and should expect delays of up to 10 minutes.
According to a release from the California Department of Transportation, nightly closures will take place from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting Sunday night and ending Thursday morning. Motorists will be detoured off southbound Highway 1 at Park Avenue and take McGregor Drive before rejoining Highway 1 at the State Park Drive on-ramp. Local traffic will be detoured onto Soquel Drive or McGregor Drive to access State Park Road.
During these overnight closures, crews will install a series of drainage crossings. This work involves saw-cutting the existing pavement, excavating trenches, installing culverts and backfilling the trenches. The work is part of a $78 million project by Granite Construction of Watsonville that will be completed by September 2026.
