Editor’s note: Lookout editors wanted to give you a chance to hear from candidates directly. But we also did not want them to simply repeat their campaign slogans. So we asked them a single question: “How will you provide the sort of leadership our community needs and how are you prepared to meet the moment as it arises?”
We gave them 500 words to answer. We hope their answers will provide one more outlet of information as you decide who to vote for on March 5.
Through diverse experiences in food service, education, child development, health care, construction and wildlife biology, I have embraced the values of keen observation and an open heart since my formative years. These experiences have led me to my current role at the City of Santa Cruz Water Department, where my background as a biologist has cultivated a deep understanding of environmental justice and sustainability, both critical issues in our community.
My commitment to preserving the environment for future generations and ensuring the sustainability of Santa Cruz drives me to seek a leadership role. My multifaceted experiences, especially as a laborer, have instilled a robust work ethic and a dedication to amplifying the voices of working families. I firmly believe that respect and dignity should be afforded to all residents, and inclusivity should be the cornerstone of our community dialogues.
In my current capacity at the Water Department, I actively contribute to the vital task of maintaining our community’s water resources. Adapting to the challenges posed by a changing climate and population growth, I engage in reviewing, inspecting and installing water services for our growing city. This hands-on involvement places me at the nexus of design, permitting, state mandates, objective standards, planning and development. It provides me with a unique perspective on the channels that can open up housing opportunities for everyone in our community.
Housing stands as one of the pressing issues facing Santa Cruz, and I am determined to address it head-on. With my experience in water management intricately linked to the broader concerns of city planning, I am well-equipped to tackle the challenges associated with housing and work to ensure that every resident has a place to call home.
As a representative of District 1 on the Santa Cruz City Council, I aspire to be a catalyst for positive change.
My goal is to tirelessly work toward a more sustainable, inclusive and prosperous Santa Cruz. The amalgamation of my background in various fields, coupled with my current role, provides me with a holistic understanding of the intricate tapestry of our community’s needs. Through collaboration and dedication, I believe we can create a brighter future together.
