The downtown Santa Cruz farmers market is extending its operating hours on Wednesdays, now opening a half-hour earlier and running from 12:30 to 5 p.m.
It will be closed on Dec. 24 and 31.
Established in 1990 by a collective of small organic farmers, the downtown market functions as the central hub for the Santa Cruz Community Farmers’ Markets‘ five-market network.
The farmers market offers seasonal produce, including greens, pomegranates, persimmons, kiwi, fresh herbs, dried fruit and local honey. It has grown in recent years, and in June relocated to Cedar Street between Walnut Avenue and Church Street and half a block west on Church Street. Its previous home on the parking lot on Cedar Street between Lincoln and Cathcart streets – known as Lot 4 – is under construction as the future site of the downtown mixed-use library project.
Local artists also showcase creations, offering functional ceramics, tinctures, body products, wreaths and gourmet foods. The market sells gift certificates that can be used at any of the nearly 100 vendors.
