A rolling closure of portions of Highway 1 will take place Sunday, Sept. 8, to accommodate the biking portion of the Ironman 70.3 Santa Cruz triathlon.
Northbound Highway 1 will be closed between Western Drive in Santa Cruz and Pigeon Point Road in San Mateo County from 7 to 9:30 a.m. as competitors complete the first leg of their ride.
Southbound Highway 1 will be closed Pigeon Point Road and Western Drive from 8:15 to 11:45 a.m. as riders complete the return leg of the race.
California Highway Patrol will be on hand to assist with traffic control, including allowing local traffic to enter Highway 1 when safe to do so at locations including Shaffer Road, Dimeo Lane, Scaroni Road, Coast Road, Laguna Road, Bonny Doon Road, Davenport Avenue, Davenport Landing Road, Cement Road, Hoover Road, White House Canyon Road, Rossi Road and Gazos Creek Road.
But travelers at those intersections, the California Department of Transportation warned in a release, can expect delays of up to 30 minutes depending on the volume of riders passing at any given time. More information about the Ironman 70.3 Santa Cruz triathlon can be found here.
