Dangerous ocean conditions are expected to batter California’s Central Coast this weekend, with massive waves potentially forcing the closure of Santa Cruz County beaches during the holiday season, state officials said.
Forecasters predict two powerful westerly swells, with the first system arriving Saturday and intensifying through Sunday. West-facing beaches are expected to see surf in the 10-to-20-foot size range, with more exposed coastline seeing waves reaching up to 40 feet in some areas.
A second, more powerful swell system is expected to arrive on Monday, bringing waves of 15 to 20 feet along much of the coastline, with significantly larger breakers at west-facing beaches.
The powerful swells are expected to generate hazardous conditions including dangerous rip currents, unpredictable set waves, and strong tidal surges during a period of heightened beach activity.
In response to the forecast, officials with California State Parks said they could have to temporarily close state beaches in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties for public safety.
