Lookout has been nominated for “Excellence in Breaking News” for our reporting on the series of atmospheric rivers that caused widespread flooding, landslides and ocean swells across Santa Cruz County in January 2023. The coverage also won a Pulitzer Prize in May. Other Scripps Howard Award finalists in the category are the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press. The winner will be announced Oct. 20.

Lookout has been nominated for another prestigious national journalism award for our coverage of the storms that struck Santa Cruz County in January 2023.

The Scripps Howard Awards, presented by the Scripps Howard Fund and The E.W. Scripps Company, honors journalism that “spurs action, news organizations that go the extra mile to expose previously undisclosed or misunderstood information and journalists who embrace new tools, channels, technologies and approaches to provide more immersive experiences for their audiences.” The award is open to all media, including television, radio, newspapers and digital-only outlets.

Lookout was nominated for Excellence in Breaking News for our tireless reporting on the series of atmospheric rivers that caused widespread flooding, landslides and ocean swells that damaged more than 1,000 homes and businesses across the county.

In May, Lookout received the Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Reporting for the same coverage.

Other finalists for the Scripps Howard Award for breaking news include the Los Angeles Times for its coverage of a mass shooting on Lunar New Year and the Associated Press for its reporting on the deadly wildfires in Maui.

Scripps Howard judges praised Lookout’s “diligence and dedication” in providing up-to-the-minute coverage, as well as our reporting that added context and raised important questions about the official response to the storms.

“For its ceaseless efforts to provide vital, quality and timely news to its local community, the Lookout Santa Cruz team deserves to be commended,” the judges wrote.

Winners will be announced on Oct. 20 in a broadcast airing on Scripps News at 5 p.m. PT.
