The Santa Cruz Police Department is charging Robert David Worel, 32, with attempted murder after he was arrested in connection with a stabbing Saturday afternoon near the clocktower in downtown Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz police officers came to the area around 12:15 p.m. on Saturday after receiving reports of assault with a weapon. They found two people who appeared to have suffered stab wounds. Santa Cruz Fire Department personnel administered medical aid until emergency first responders arrived and took them to local hospitals.

Officers located Worel quickly upon arrival and took him into custody. He was booked into the Santa Cruz County jail.

Eyewitnesses told Lookout on Saturday that they saw two people get stabbed. A Food Not Bombs volunteer said the incident started when the suspect cut the food line, angering the person behind him. She said a fistfight broke out shortly after, leading to Worel pulling a knife.

According to a Tuesday media release from SCPD, one victim has been released from the hospital, while the other remains under medical care.
