Property code violations

County officials cite property owners for issues such as substandard housing, illegal uses of buildings, property maintenance, abandoned appliances or furniture, construction without permits, and other issues that affect public safety and quality of life.

  • The property at 1270 Capitola Rd., Santa Cruz, which was first cited for building code violations on Oct. 3, 2024, under case number NV25145, has now resolved the cited issues. The violations included unauthorized construction of an attached deck, the addition of a new accessory structure with plumbing and electrical systems, alterations to an existing accessory structure, and the installation of a plumbed gas fire pit with new electrical and plumbing connections. A “Stop Work” order had been issued on June 21, 2024, to halt these activities and bring the property into compliance. The property owner has been assessed fees that must be paid to the county as part of the resolution process.
