EAT THIS: THANKSGIVING DINNER SANDWICH AT BUSY BEES CAFE

Thanksgiving is about debates as much as it is about food and family: dry versus wet brine for the turkey, canned versus homemade cranberry sauce, and whether the leftovers are actually better than the meal itself.

If you consider yourself Team Leftovers, I have the sandwich for you: the Thanksgiving Dinner Sandwich ($15) at Busy Bees Cafe and Catering in Capitola, a messy, indulgent creation that tastes better than homemade because you didn’t have to make it yourself.

You already know what’s inside: homemade stuffing, fragrant with sage and little bites of apple; a layer of silky mashed potatoes; slices of roasted turkey breast; cranberry sauce; and a swipe of mayo.

The star character might be the thick slices of soft, buttery challah made fresh daily at the cafe. Challah isn’t known for its structural integrity, and the plush bread barely holds the sloppy insides together – a toothpick stabbed through each half of the sandwich provides crucial support. But the flavor, texture and aroma that fills your sinuses as you bite into are worth the extra napkins.

This sandwich is on special through November, so you have all month to get your Thanksgiving fix.
