Local news in the classroom: Weekly roundup 3/18/26

Good afternoon,

Along with signs of spring across the Central Coast, new developments in research and state politics are drawing attention to issues shaping the region’s future. A new report from researchers at UC Santa Cruz examines the financial, social and legal challenges faced by farmworkers in the area, offering a closer look at the barriers that affect one of the region’s most essential workforces. At the same time, the race to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom is beginning to take shape, with six Democratic candidates gathering on the Central Coast to share their visions for California’s future in a wide-open primary. We’ll dive into these stories below.

You can now read the top winning stories of our annual Student Journalism Scholarship HERE! Our top three students were Jesus Heredia Collazo from Watsonville High School, Brady Clark from Coast Redwood High School, and Valeria Marquez from Watsonville High School. You can read about the journalism scholarship and what made these winning stories special here. I want to give a big thank you to everyone who told their students about Lookout’s journalism scholarship!

This week’s highlighted stories

Here’s a roundup of recent articles you could use in your classroom. Explore the linked lesson plans below for simple ways to facilitate reflection on these local events. Interested in more stories? Browse all our recent coverage here.

Why it matters: A UC Santa Cruz study found that many central California farmworkers earn around $23,000 a year, far below what families need to cover basic living costs in the region. The report also highlights issues such as limited legal protections, immigration-related fears, and difficulty accessing housing, childcare, and transportation. Due to these factors, despite their essential role in the agricultural economy, many farmworker families are left living in poverty.

In the classroom: What were some of the main financial, social and legal challenges that farmworkers in the report said they face? How can immigration status affect a worker’s ability to access legal protections or services? What are some ways that housing, childcare and transportation issues can impact a farmworker family’s daily life? What actions could local governments or communities take to help improve the living and working conditions of farmworkers?

In a wide-open Democratic primary for governor, 6 candidates converge on Central Coast

Why it matters: Six Democratic candidates for California governor met in a debate on the Central Coast to share their ideas and plans for the state. The candidates discussed issues like housing, health care and taxes while trying to stand out in a crowded race. With many Democrats running and no clear favorite, the primary election is expected to be very competitive.

In the classroom: What were some of the main issues the candidates discussed during the debate, and why are these issues important for California? Why do you think so many Democrats are running in the governor’s race this year? What challenges can a crowded election create?
