Pajaro Valley school board votes to cut nearly 160 jobs, more than 40 in special education, during stormy meeting

In a marathon, chaotic session that ended with the room being cleared because of disruptions, Pajaro Valley Unified School District trustees voted Thursday to cut 160 jobs in an effort to stay solvent and comply with California budget requirements.

Drop in whale entanglements fuels optimism that Dungeness crab season can open Jan. 1

County housing market sales, inventory trend down as slow season begins

The Santa Cruz County housing market saw its sales drop and the number of houses on the market fall below 400 for the first time since March as the slow time of the year takes hold. Inventory remains higher than the same time last year, and houses are also taking longer to sell than they did a year ago.

California’s last nuclear power plant faces renewed scrutiny as it gains latest permit

The California Coastal Commission is requiring the state’s last nuclear power plant – Diablo Canyon, near San Luis Obispo – to conserve 4,000 acres of surrounding land to keep operating until 2030.

Capitola City Council votes to fund conceptual plan to repair crumbling Grand Avenue pathway

Capitola will spend $13,000 for a concept design and survey of the popular bluffside Grand Avenue walking path on Depot Hill, a section of which collapsed into the ocean in February.
