Max Chun starts off a busy morning with a pair of stories. Two advocacy groups are suing Caltrans over Highway 1 widening in Aptos, citing issues with the environmental impact report for work planned between State Park Drive and Freedom Boulevard.

Max was also in a Santa Cruz courtroom Monday for the opening of the trial of John Frederick Burke, charged with murder in the 2022 death of Neoklis Koumides. The prosecution argued that the stabbing was calculated.

The local commercial salmon fishing fleet is facing another tough season – or perhaps no season at all – as a regional fisheries council mulls new restrictions, Jessica M. Pasko reports. That comes after the 2023 season was canceled entirely.

And in Lookout’s Community Voices opinion section, cannabis dispensary owner Bryce Berryessa addresses concerns raised by local educators in a previous op-ed about the dispensary he’s looking to open at Mission and Laurel streets in Santa Cruz.

Sierra Club, local advocacy group sue Caltrans over Highway 1 widening in Aptos

The Campaign for Sustainable Transportation and the Sierra Club have filed a lawsuit against Caltrans, claiming that the environmental impact report for the Highway 1 widening project is inadequate and incomplete. The legal action does not affect ongoing work. Max Chun has details.

California’s commercial salmon fishermen face another disaster of a season amid proposed federal restrictions

A regional fishery council is mulling three proposals for commercial salmon season, with one canceling the season entirely and the other two severely limiting how long the season would last and how many salmon could be taken. More here from Jessica M. Pasko.
