OPINION: For affordable housing and a humane Santa Cruz – vote yes on Measure C

Santa Cruz’s beauty and desirability drive up housing costs — and the market alone won’t build homes for teachers, bus drivers or grocery clerks, UC Santa Cruz professor emeritus Christopher Connery writes in a Community Voices op-ed. Measure C, he says, offers a fair, modest step toward fixing that: a $96 parcel tax and a progressive real estate transfer tax only on multimillion-dollar homes. He sees opponents’ competing Measure B as a decoy pushed by real estate interests to block real reform. A “yes” on C says we want a community where everyone who works here can live here.
